SHORT BLOCK ENGINE
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SHORT BLOCK, LONG BLOCK ENGINE.
TO START WITH ALL ENGINES ARE THE SAME DIMENSIONS, SOME PEOPLE ASK IF A SHORT BLOCK IS SMALLER THAN A LONG BLOCK, THE ANSWER IS NO ! THEY ARE THE SAME SIZE, THE REASON THEY CALL IT A SHORT BLOCK IS THAT MANY OF THE PARTS ARE LEFT OFF SUCH AS HEADS, ROCKER ARMS, LIFTERS, OIL PAN, ETC. IN OTHER WORDS THEY HAVE BEEN SHORTED FROM A LONG BLOCK, HENCE THE NAME SHORT BLOCK. TO HELP CLARIFY THE THREE I WILL GIVE YOU A LIST OF WHAT IS INCLUDED IN EACH ENGINE.
SHORT BLOCKS HAVE THE FOLLOWING INCLUDED.
LOWER BLOCK, CRANKSHAFT, CONNECTING RODS, PISTONS, RINGS, MAIN BEARINGS, ROD BEARINGS, CAM BEARINGS, WARNING ONLY PURCHASE THIS UNIT IF YOU HAVE A QUALIFIED ENGINE SPECIALIST WHO CAN PROPERLY CLEAN, REWORK, AND ASSEMBLE TO A COMPLETE RUNNING ENGINE, IT WILL REQUIRE NUMEROUS NEW PARTS, AND LOTS OF TIME NOT RECOMMENDED FOR THE WEEKEND WARRIOR. BUT FOR SERIOUS RACER, who just experience engine blow and want to reuse the rest of the surviving parts, THESE KIND OF BLOCK assembly are the perfect basis for high performance application. Short block starts with a brand new case. The case is inspected and then the bores are honed to perfection to receive forged pistons. To ensure smooth operation throughout the entire RPM range, each rotating assembly is carefully balanced. The essembly also includes new crank along with forged connecting rods and bearings. Each Short Block Engine Assembly includes a complete specification sheet listing all critical dimensions along with a serialized plaque. Combine with CNC ported Big Valve Cylinder Heads and Camshaft sets for additional performance. It usually comes along with these specifications :-
Balanced to within .5 gram
Complete blue-print assembly
Ring gap checked
Bearing clearance checked
Deck height checked
Connecting Rod side clearance checked
Crankshaft end float checked
LONG BLOCK ENGINES HAVE THE FOLLOWING INCLUDED.
BLOCK, CRANKSHAFT, PISTONS, RINGS, MAIN BEARINGS, ROD BEARINGS, CAM BEARINGS, CAMSHAFT, TIMING CHAIN, SPROCKETS, LIFTERS, PUSH RODS, ROCKER ARMS, CYLINDER HEADS, OIL PUMP, OIL SCREEN, AND GASKET SET. THIS WILL ALSO REQUIRE A SKILLED ENGINE SPECIALIST, AND HOURS OF TIME CLEANING THE FOLLOWING PARTS THAT YOU TAKE OFF YOUR OLD ENGINE TO REUSE ON YOUR NEW ENGINE, SUCH AS OIL PAN, TIMING COVER, VALVE COVERS, INTAKE MANIFOLD, CARBURETOR, WATER PUMP DISTRIBUTOR, ALL IGNITION COMPONENTS, IT WILL REQUIRE MANY HOURS OF CLEANING AND ASSEMBLY, PLUS IF YOU SCREW IT UP IT IS YOUR PROBLEM !!!

Aluminum Engine Block
Aluminum is the material for lighter structural components, and is also advantageous for the purpose of heat transfer. The automotive powerplant requires an efficient material with less weight and proper thermal characteristics, as demanded by early aviation applications, due to the recent necessity for environmental and energy conservation. However, cast iron has been the dominant material used for engine blocks because of simple economic reasons. To overcome the simple cost disadvantages of aluminum engine block application, it is necessary to utilize the full potential of the material to the proper advantage.New aluminum engine blocks with a unique cooling system of air assisted water cooling were developed. The basic design concept between cast iron and aluminum are the same, except for the design differences due to the structural stiffness of both materials. However, there are thermal property differences between aluminum and cast iron other than stiffness and weight. Therefore, the design method of the aluminum engine block was altered to take advantage of the thermal property.
Practically, aviation and motorcycle engines use the air cooled aluminum block because of the lighter mass and high thermal conductivity of aluminum. This report describes a unique aluminum engine block for passenger vehicles. The cooling system is an air assisted water cooling method; the water jacket was shortened for upper core and thin fins replace lower part of core to dissipate the heat where the temperature is relatively low. This yields the reduction of radiator capacity and water pump size. It has also achieved significant reduction of block mass without loss of performance. Recommended for racer who just experience engine blow but with a thick dough in the pocket.
